One Mission One Brotherhood

Celebrating 225 Years of Guiding Good Men Toward Purpose and Brotherhood, 1801–2026

Aurora Lodge is a proud member of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts and part of the 22nd Masonic District, serving the North Central region of the Commonwealth. Chartered in 1801, we are one of the oldest fraternal and charitable organizations in Central Massachusetts, supporting local causes and strengthening our community for more than 225 years.

Our lodge began its journey at Kendall Tavern on West Street in Leominster, where our first members met after receiving our charter from the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts. Today, Aurora Lodge A.F. & A.M. gathers at the Fitchburg Masonic Building at 16 Thorndike Street, meeting on the first Monday of each month and hosting Social Night every Monday evening.

Freemasonry is the world’s oldest fraternal organization, founded on the principles of freedom, equality, charity, social responsibility, and a moral code that guides men toward personal improvement. Men of faith and good character are always welcome to explore the Craft and discover the fellowship, purpose, and growth it offers.

Are we local?

Yes, that’s correct! Our About Us page shows exactly where Aurora Lodge is located, but Freemasonry extends far beyond our walls. When you become a Master Mason, you join a global fraternity—one where recognized lodges around the world welcome you as a Brother. Your journey begins here, but the Brotherhood you gain reaches across continents.

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No — Freemasonry is not a religion.

Aurora Lodge, like all recognized Masonic lodges, is a fraternal organization, not a faith or a substitute for one. We don’t offer sacraments, doctrine, or a path to salvation. What we do encourage is that every member has a belief in a higher power, however he personally understands it.

Freemasonry brings together good men from many different religious backgrounds and teaches them to live with integrity, compassion, and purpose. It strengthens your character — not your creed.

What do the Masonic symbols mean?

Masonic symbols are visual reminders of the values, lessons, and moral principles that Freemasonry teaches.

They aren’t secret or mystical — they’re tools meant to inspire reflection and personal growth. Each symbol represents an idea that helps guide a Mason in how he lives, works, and treats others.

What It Means to Be a Mason

To be a Mason means choosing to live as a good man on purpose. It’s about working on your character, helping others without expecting anything in return, and building friendships with men who share the same values. Masons believe in personal growth, moral integrity, and supporting their communities. It isn’t about secrets or status — it’s about becoming a better version of yourself and helping make the world around you a little better, one small act at a time.

1733 Light & Faith

Freemasonry in Massachusetts is among the oldest and most influential Masonic traditions in the world. It began in 1733 when Henry Price was appointed Provincial Grand Master of New England, establishing the first recognized Grand Lodge in the Western Hemisphere. From colonial taverns to modern lodge halls, Massachusetts Freemasonry has shaped generations of community leaders, craftsmen, and public servants. Rooted in the principles of brotherhood, charity, and moral improvement, the Craft has grown across the Commonwealth for nearly three centuries, supporting local communities, fostering education, and guiding good men toward lives of purpose and service.

Faith, Hope, Charity

Faith – Trust in the Divine as the guiding light of a Mason’s life. It is the virtue that anchors a man to moral truth, steadies his judgment, and reminds him that his actions are accountable to a higher purpose. Through Faith, a Mason builds character on a foundation that does not shift with circumstance.

Hope – Confidence in the future and the perseverance to continue the journey even when the path is difficult. Hope lifts the mind above present challenges and inspires a Mason to strive for improvement, trusting that his labor—both moral and charitable—leads toward greater light.

Charity – The active expression of brotherly love through relief, benevolence, and kindness. Charity is more than giving; it is the willingness to ease another’s burden, to act with compassion, and to extend goodwill without expectation of reward. It is the virtue by which a Mason’s character is most clearly known.

For 225 years, we’ve welcomed those who seek more — more purpose, more connection, more meaning.
